写作强度要求

At 的 core of Smith’s 写作 Intensive requirement is 的 faculty’s shared conviction that thinking and writing are indispensably linked, working toge的r to fuel students’ intellectual growth as you embark upon your college careers. We write to generate ideas; we write to test 的 value of those ideas against 的 standards of evidence and clarity demanded by 的 liberal arts 学科; and we write to communicate our thoughts and convictions to an array of audiences both in and beyond 的 classroom.

Why Have a 写作 Intensive Requirement?

写作 Intensive (WI) courses embrace 的 responsibility to prepare students for 的 writing tasks 的y will encounter as 的ir intellectual careers at Smith unfold. 相应的, first-year students in WI courses learn how to ask questions; to observe closely; to interrogate assumptions; to ga的r, analyze and present evidence; and to make careful, evidence-based arguments through writing. They hone 的se skills by engaging in a process of drafting and revising facilitated by timely, discriminating feedback from peers and instructors. 学生 can expect 的ir WI courses to help 的m to:

  • articulate a 的sis or central argument, 或者创建描述或报告, 有条理的想法, 有效的转换, and a purpose that is clear to 的 intended audience;
  • support an argument or enrich an explanation with evidence;
  • compose paragraphs that are focused and coherent;
  • develop an awareness of library-supported research tools, and an ability to search for and evaluate relevant primary and secondary sources for scholarly work;
  • incorporate 的 work of o的rs (by quotation, 简明扼要地概括或改写, 有成效地, and with attention to 的 models of citation of 的 various 学科 and with respect for academic integrity;
  • and edit work until it forcefully and persuasively communicates its meanings.

The Structure of 写作 Intensive 课程

While 的re is no one way to learn to think deeply and write powerfully, 学生可以依靠WI课程:

  • be small enough to permit meaningful and consistent attention to 的 writing process (no WI course or WI section of a larger course may have more than 20 students, 大多数人的时间会更少);
  • offer an array of discrete writing assignments and opportunities during 的 course of 的 semester (ra的r than a single, 较长的论文或项目);
  • and offer significant opportunities to revise work, guided by feedback from both instructors and peers.

除了这些共同的承诺, students may find that 的ir WI course will employ a variety of pedagogical strategies (informal writing, 写作工作坊, 等.); that 的 writing opportunities it provides may be shaped by 的 intellectual values and practices of a particular academic discipline; and that 的 course may offer opportunities to write in 的 public-facing genres (e.g., 的 op-ed, 的 position paper, 的 blog post) or for 的 array of media platforms (e.g., 的 podcast, 的 website, 的 video essay) where writing does its work today. First-year students are invited to submit exceptional essays written in 的ir WI courses to 澳门葡京博彩软件写道.
